Katie’s Lymphoedema Fund provides a number of bursaries to cover the costs of attendance of health care professionals on three lymphoedema management related courses at The Royal Marsden School of Cancer Nursing and Rehabilitation.
The aim of these bursaries is to support Katie’s Lymphoedema Fund in increasing the availability of therapists with specialist knowledge/skills to treat this condition. Applications are therefore welcomed from across the UK.
Bursaries will cover course fees only and to be eligible for sponsorship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Nurses and Allied Health Professionals only with current professional registration
- Working in cancer care
- No funding available from other sources
- Use their skills to offer services that patients do not pay for (e.g. within the NHS or hospice)
Anyone who meets the criteria and wishes to apply for a bursary should follow the instructions detailed below.
Details of courses are as follows:
1. Lymphoedema: Principles & Practice (blended learning)

Duration | Equivalent to 5 days (classroom and online tuition) |
Dates | December 2015 (Final dates TBC) This is a blended learning module and some content is delivered online. E-learning materials are released in advance and students are expected to log in and participate in the activities during those weeks. Students do not need to log in at a specific date/time. |
Cost | £970 for academic year 2015/16. Katie’s Lymphoedema Fund are providing bursaries for this module for applicants from hospices and NHS organisations. See below how to apply. |

Course summary
The module is aimed at professionals who are currently treating patients with lymphoedema. It will give the student the opportunity to gain knowledge of the evidence base for the causes and treatment of this condition and will introduce and develop the knowledge and skills required to successfully assess, plan and provide appropriate treatment strategies while caring for individuals with Lymphoedema.

2. Fluoroscopy Guided Manual Lymphatic Drainage (FG: Leduc Method

Entry requirements | This course is open to healthcare professionals who have attended the School’s Lymphoedema in Cancer Care module or an equivalent course. This course requires prior knowledge of Lymphoedema. |
Duration | 6 taught days plus 1 assessment day |

Cost | Course fees for all places on this course are supported by Katie’s Lymphoedema Fund. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria (see above). |

Course summary
This course will integrate theory and practice and the latest innovative research involving Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Participants are expected to involve themselves fully in the practice workshops where they will be shown how to map patients in order to acquaint themselves with the movements and techniques used within this method. Participants will practice techniques on fellow students in the classroom.
Course leader
The course will be led by Jane Wigg and the Lymphoedema Training Academy. Jane is the only authorised trainer of the F-G MLD technique of manual lymphatic drainage in the UK. Jane will be supported by Mary Woods, Lead Nurse Lymphoedema Service at The Royal Marsden Hospital.
Further study opportunities
The Royal Marsden School will offer the opportunity for students to attend a two-day FG-MLD update after successful completion of the course. Participants will be contacted with these dates.
How to apply for a bursary
Those who meet the criteria and would like to apply should complete a Royal Marsden School application form (which can be downloaded from the Royal Marsden website or requested from the School) and attach an additional personal statement. The latter should outline, in approximately 200 words why they should receive sponsorship to undertake this course.
To give your application for sponsorship the best possible chance, your statement should address the following questions:
- What benefits will this opportunity provide in terms of patient care?
- How will the training support the development needs of the service?
- How will the training support the development needs of the practitioner?
